Most of the women want to make a statement by the way they dress up and accessorize themselves nowadays. Yesterday I went shopping. Who doesn’t like shopping? Ok maybe not everyone likes shopping, but once in a while we still need to go shopping. Anyway, yesterday I bought myself a dress. It was with black little dots and roses. When I dressed up with it looked to dull so I said to myself that some nice colourful jewellery would bring out the best of it. I must confess I am a little eccentric so I bought some turquoise feathered earrings, a long beaded necklace that was long till my waist and I made a nod about 4 inches before it’s end and of course shoes in the same shade. Because I am a redhead it all matched wonderfully.
I am not here to talk about the shopping spree I had yesterday. I am here to talk about the jewellery’s role in making our statement as women, especially on our wedding day: bridal jewellery. I hope that by giving that little example about my shopping yesterday I showed you how important is to accessorize yourself properly when it comes to dressing up. Of course it depends on each person style and taste when we make our choices and also of our cultural backgrounds. In each country in this world there different traditions regarding the wedding and the way a bride dresses up of course. In European and American countries there are many similarities. Mostly the bride wears a snow white gown, a fine silver or gold necklace with diamonds or other precious stones, a tiara, the engagement ring and the wedding band. This is the most common example and everyone knows about it and most of us women dream about it. What about the African bride? What would she wear as bridal jewellery? Many of them want a wedding that would reflect where they come from. I will give as example a Moroccan wedding. Usually a Moroccan wedding is very impressive and expensive. The brides’ dowry is used to pay for furniture and trousseau. The jewellery she receives must be made of gold. Five days before the wedding all sorts of things like blankets and mattresses are carried in the bridal chamber and then the bride, assisted by her female wedding attendants, has a bath in hammam. Her attendants they apply her make up and the henna designs on her hands and feet. Then she is dressed in her finely embroidered wedding robes. After all this the bride is placed behind a curtain which symbolizes her transition to her new life. After this for the next seven days she is carried by her attendants who are singing and shouting, to the wedding chamber. Then the wedding attendants stay behind the curtain to verify the brides` virginity and witness her defloration. After a second hammam bath the attendants leave and the wedded couple are left alone.
The traditional Moroccan jewellery is made of gold and silver and it shows where is the person who wears them from, the tribe or geographical region. As I said before the bridal jewellery in Moroccan tradition must be made of gold. This type of jewellery is mostly hand made and unique and is inspired by urban and rural traditions. They can be decorated with gems, shells, coral or coins and there is a great variety of them.
Even if we will never be Moroccan brides we can still bring a plus of unique style to the clothes we wear by using Moroccan jewellery. They are exotic and exquisite and they would make a great achievement in any woman’s jewellery box. I know that I would be delighted to have some pieces myself.

  1. Nice writing style that you have :) but it seems that you went a bit out of context while talking about the Moroccan wedding process. Apart from that, i totally agree on your main idea : no matter what kind of jewellery we like to wear, it gives a "plus" to an outfit !
